Article from www.wirelessfoundation.org A woman is physically abused in this country every nine seconds. Domestic violence is quickly being recognized as one of the leading problems in American society. According to the Family Violence Prevention Fund, 83 percent of Americans consider domestic violence an extremely important social issue, ranking it above other major issues such as the environment, teenage alcoholism and teen pregnancy. The Wireless Foundation's CALL to PROTECT is a national educational and philanthropic program that distributes old wireless phones to victims of domestic violence. CALL to PROTECT provides the security and mobility of wireless phones to victims, especially during the transition from living in an abusive situation to one of safety and independence. The wireless phones, pre-programmed to dial 911 and one non-emergency number, can summon help with the push of a button to assist a victim in transitioning from a life of fear to a feeling of protection. As part of its CALL to PROTECT program, the Wireless Foundation, National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV) and Motorola began Donate a Phone, a national campaign that collects old wireless phones from consumers. These phones will either be refurbished and given with free emergency airtime to domestic violence victims or sold, with proceeds benefiting domestic violence organizations and the CALL to PROTECT program. CALL to PROTECT
also provides wireless phones to domestic violence professionals so
they can reach victims, report cases of abuse and contact emergency
services immediately, if necessary. For a victim of abuse, a caseworker
with a wireless phone can mean the difference between safety and harm.
